Wyntercon VIII Cosplay Convention
Photos by Dean Thorpe, one of the official event photographers.
2021 was the return of Wyntercon to its origin, the new and vastly improved Winter Garden in Eastbourne, East Sussex. This was the location for the first three awesome Wyntercon events, two of which I was lucky enough to attend, one as a visitor, one as an official photographer. Since then the event has been held at Princes Park and Eastbourne College, plus one was sadly cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but better safe than sorry. I hope Wyntercon 2022 will be at the Winter Garden again as it's a great location for it.
I love events like this, I am a self-confessed nerd / geek into sci-fi, horror, gaming, cosplay and so much more. There are always great stalls selling all kinds of geeky and fun things, special guests, demonstrations, cosplay performers, workshops and so on. Not forgetting all the amazing people attending, many in their own great cosplay costumes, all adding to the fun of the event.
Wyntercon is not the biggest convention in the UK, but far from the smallest either and it's getting bigger and better every year. To me one of the biggest differences and one of the reasons I love supporting this event is that it's run by a great charity (registered charity no: 1178076) instead of a big money making business.
I was an official photographer (thank you Andy!), but I don't do my photography as a business, this is just a completely non profit hobby. If you want to use any of these photos for positive, non profit purposes then feel free, a link back to my website, to my photos on Facebook or my Instagram would be awesome if possible. The events organisers, stall holders, cosplayers, entertainers etc. can use them for anything they want, I love seeing my photos used for things.
My cosplay was planned to be my own creation, a robot dog type thing, but in the end I only wore the helmet and arm mounted control panel to control the Arduino based lighting systems and fans I built into the helmet. About half way through my time at the event the helmet had to go as I was too hot in it, which was a shame.
Best things about Wyntercon for me are the friendly atmosphere and getting to hang out with like minded people in a safe space.
If I could add one thing to Wyntercon IX it would be more things linked to video games, I don't mind if it's modern or retro, computer or console, preferably all of those, I just love video games!
See you all again next year x x
