An Amazing Annual Event in Hastings
Jack in the Green is one of my favourite events. It's held every year in a few different places, but the one I always go to is in Hastings in East Sussex and it's a huge event that takes over big parts of the town. Jack in the Green is usually held on May Day, the first Monday in May, but for 2020 the government have decided to move the bank holiday to the Friday instead, I can understand why, but a lot of people are quite rightly annoyed as events like Jack in the green get planned years in advance, people book hotels for the Bank Holiday Monday etc.
Jack in the Green is not actually a Pagan event, but it does have a very Pagan feel to it. Thousands of people parading around the town and then a big festival up on Hastings West Hill, the vast majority of people dressed in green with green face paints or fabulous masks. Jack in the Green is all about nature and the change of seasons, which is why there is all the green.
Some of the costumes are amazing, which as a photographer is a great opportunity for lots of really great shots. My speciality is candid photography at all the events I photograph, but even more so at Jack in the Green as there is so much going on and everybody is moving, so stopping people and asking if they want to be photographed isn't practical, plus I hate most posed photos, it's much nicer to get natural shots of people having fun.
